Steve Six took office as the 43rd Attorney General of Kansas in January of 2008. As Attorney General, he has focused on fighting crime, protecting consumers and making Kansas a safer place to live, work and raise a family.
As the father of four young children, Attorney General Six worries about the dangers Kansans face on the internet and he has cracked down on internet crimes and sexual predators. Steve created the Kansas Bureau of Investigation Sexual Predator's Unit to uncover sexual predators, investigate sex crimes, and put predators behind bars.
Recognizing that education is the key to protecting kids in cyberspace, Steve developed the www.netsafekansas.com web site to share internet safety tips with Kansas parents, teens and kids. As more and more Kansans expand their use of the internet at an earlier age, Attorney General Six partnered with the attorneys general task force on social networking sites to make these gathering places for young people safer and free from sexual predators.
Attorney General Six has made protecting Kansas consumers a priority. He cracked down on individuals who commit fraud and scams and significantly increased the money recovered by his consumer protection division. Steve refocused the division on vigorously enforcing consumer protections laws, implementing a new mediation program and ensuring Kansas businesses can compete on a level playing field.
To help reach Kansans before they become the victim of a financial scam, Steve developed the first state-wide consumer protection workshops aimed at teaching high school students the skills they need to make smarter financial choices. To help those who have already been the victims of identity theft, Steve created the "Identity Theft Repair Kit" .
Recognizing the burden health care costs are placing on all Kansans, Attorney General Six has focused on stamping out Medicaid fraud and more than quadrupled recoveries to the Kansas Medicaid program, returning taxpayer dollars to the state.
In addition to managing the divisions of the attorney general's office, Steve continues to work on behalf of Kansans in court, personally prosecuting criminals charged with crimes across the state. Attorney General Six also represents the interests of Kansas farmers and land owners, by arguing a case in the United States Supreme Court to require the State of Colorado to reimburse Kansas for costs associated with the state's successful lawsuit over water unfairly taken from the Arkansas River.
Steve is dedicated to the victims of crime and has expanded the resources available to Kansas crime victims. The Victims Services Division works to protect victims of crime and uphold the "Kansas Crime Victims' Bill of Rights." Steve has increased the training provided by the attorney general's office in the areas of domestic violence, Amber Alert and stalking.
Steve is a lifelong resident of Kansas, a graduate of the Kansas School of Law and resides in Lawrence with his wife and four kids.
