Memorial Services for Jana Mackey

A message from Chairman Larry Gates:

Dear Friends,

As many of you may already know, our dear friend and young Democratic activist, Jana Lynne Mackey, was taken from this world before her noble and inspiring work was completed.

Jana dedicated countless hours and an endless energy to volunteering for Democratic candidates, lobbying for affordable health care and women’s rights, and furthering the progressive issues that are near and dear to our hearts. She will be deeply missed.

Services for Jana Mackey will begin at 2:00 p.m., this Wednesday July 9th, at Liberty Hall in Lawrence. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to:

Our thoughts and prayers are with Jana's family, her many friends and her fellow Democrats.

Jana was a friend to so many

Jana was a friend to so many on the KDP staff over the years, and I know she was close to the people she worked with in the Capitol and on campus. She was an incredibly spirited woman who gave so much of her time and energy to making Kansas a great place to live. Everybody has a different perspective on what made her so amazing, which is a testament to her tireless efforts to making every minute count. It's a tragedy that we look to her now as an inspiration not for what we would accomplish by her side, but in her stead. I'm grateful for having had the opportunity to know Jana, and I'm sorry for the pain and sorrow that her passing causes for everybody who knew her better than I did.

I'm so glad you posted this. She truly was so inspirational. I'm proud to have advocated alongside of her. My life is richer because I knew her. Those who never were lucky enough to had met her just will never know how much they were missing. Thankfully, she knew so many who can testify to that. And that flag presentation at the memorial service was...words cannot describe how proud I felt at that moment. I could hear her in my head saying "no, seriously? ME? Are you kidding me?". She'd had been so honored.
