About
Senator Chris Steineger was elected to the Kansas Senate’s 6th District in November 1997. As a State Senator, Chris serves on the Senate Ways and Means Committee, which is responsible for recommending to the legislature an annual state budget that balances the needs of all state agencies.In 2007, as a member of the Senate Education Committee, Chris was instrumental in passing a three-year public school finance plan. The historic investment has helped improve the quality of education for thousands of Kansas City public school children by addressing special education, bilingual education, and at-risk programs. In 2008, he helped local schools continue to address special education needs and to plan for the future by expanding the plan for a fourth year.
In addition to serving on the Ways and Means Committee and the Education Committee, Chris is the Ranking Minority Member of the Senate Financial Institutions and Insurance Committee. He also is a member of the Joint Committees on Administrative Rules and Regulations, Arts and Cultural Resources, Information Technology, Kansas Security, and Legislative Post Audit.
Privately, Chris serves on several community boards including the Wyandotte County Historical Society, Kaw Valley Arts & Humanities and Grinter Place Friends. He has also participated in a number of study abroad and international exchange programs including the German Chamber of Commerce Exchange Program, European Union Visitors Program, German Academic Exchange Program, Public Policy Fellowship sponsored by the U.S. Japan Society, and the East-West Center Pacific Rim Nations Young Leaders Exchange Program.
Prior to joining the Kansas Senate, Chris worked as a staff member to U.S. Representative Jim Slattery; as an Assistant in the City Administrator’s office in Kansas City; and as a tax auditor and collector with the Kansas Department of Revenue. Chris is a proud graduate of Turner High School in Kansas City, Kansas. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Management form Kansas State University and a Masters in Public Administration from the University of Kansas. He and his wife, Shari, live in Kansas City.
