Abner Perney
Candidate for Kansas Senate - District 24
About
Abner Perney currently serves as Salina City Commissioner.“I have filed for office because our state can no longer conduct ‘business as usual’ on many important issues. This is especially true of the three big ‘E’s’ – energy, the economy and education – which are all pivotal components of our overall environment,” he said. “The incumbent’s record demonstrates that he is not willing to look toward innovative approaches to solving the challenges facing the future of Kansas.”
Senate District 24 includes Abilene, Ottawa County and Saline County. “Our Senate District is geographically positioned between urban eastern and rural western portions of state. Having lived in Kansas most of my life, I understand the concerns and the opportunities for both communities and will work to find solutions that realistically employ the common strengths of our state,” Perney said.
A native Kansan, Perney was educated in Kansas public schools before earning a Bachelor of Architecture at the University of Colorado.
He is in his third term as City Commissioner in Salina, and has also served on the Planning Commission. He served for 11 years as a Multifamily Housing Representative for the U.S. Department of Housing and 11 years as Director of the Salina Housing Authority. He also worked for eight years as a real estate developer and contractor.
Perney, who has been a small business owner for 10 years, currently owns and operates Abner’s Autos in Salina. He also continues working to provide affordable housing in the community.
He has been active in several community volunteer organizations, including the founding boards of the Ashby House and Salina Habitat for Humanity.
He married Kathryne in 1967 and has two sons. Dylan, of Salina, is married to Teri. He graduated from Salina Central, Bethany College, Lindsborg, and earned his Masters degree from Emporia State University. He is employed by Vortex Valves of Salina. Adam, currently of Lakewood, Colorado, is married to Bai. He graduated from Salina Central and earned a degree in Geology from Western State College of Gunnison, Colorado.
