State Rep. Dolores Furtado

Kansas House - District 19

About

I attended public schools in Rhode Island.  I earned a B.S. degree in Bacteriology from Cornell University and continued in Microbiology at the University of Michigan where I earned M.S. and Ph.D. degrees.  Following postdoctoral training at Guy's Hospital Medical School (London) and Yale University School of Medicine, I joined the University of Kansas Medical School Faculty as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology.  After 31 years of teaching, research and service, I retired in 2001.  I am currently Professor Emerita in the School of Medicine.

In 2002 I was elected County Commissioner to represent District 4 (within Overland Park) on the Johnson County Board of County Commissioners.  During my 4 year term, I brought the prescription drug discount cards to the county, passed smoking restriction in public places (Johnson County is first county in KS to do so), developed new transit routes for persons with disabilities; supported the K-10 Connector route, expanded services for senior citizens, for Developmental Support and Mental Health.  I participated in the negotiations that transferred the Sunflower Ammunitions Plant property to the county.

During 2007, I have joined the Boards of TriCounty Smart Start, Kansas Health Solutions, CASA of Johnson and Wyandotte Counties, Johnson County Nursing Center and Public Health Partners and Aging Information.
