Rep. Jim Ward represents the 88th Kansas House District, which includes southeast Wichita. He was first elected to the Kansas House of Representatives in 2002 and was selected to serve as the Assistant Minority Leader in 2005.

As a state legislator, Jim has been actively engaged in the effort to provide affordable health care to working Kansas families. He has also worked tirelessly to build strong Kansas schools and guarantee adequate funding for public education. Jim has been a longtime advocate for Kansas working families and has supported policies to help create jobs in Wichita and help grow small businesses.

In his leadership role at the Capitol, Jim serves on the House Committees on Judiciary, Health & Human Services, Legislative Budget and Interstate Cooperation. He has also served on the Kansas Criminal Justice Recodification Commission, the Governor’s Strategic Military Planning Commission, and the Task Force on Crime and Sentencing.

Prior to his election to the Kansas Legislature, Jim established himself as a successful attorney in Sedgwick County, both in the public and private sector. While working as an Assistant District Attorney for the 18th Judicial District, Jim handled thousands of criminal cases and maintained a conviction rate of over 90 percent. Jim opened his own practice in 1990, where he currently emphasizes family law, child support, child custody, real estate matters and automobile accidents.

Is an active member of the community, Jim has served a number of boards and organizations in an effort to advance causes such as literacy, citizenship and truancy prevention. He served as a member of the USD 259 School Board from 1999-2003, as well as the Wichita City Council, the Citizens Participation Organization and Kansas State Senate in 1991. Jim resides in Wichita with his wife, Karen, and their children, Zachary and Emily.
