Sen. Laura Kelly Named "Champion" for her Work on Improving Health Care for Kansans
In recognition of her long-term commitment to improving health care access, the Kansas Association for the Medically Underserved (KAMU) has awarded Senator Laura Kelly, D-Topeka, with the 2008 Community Health Champion Award.
The annual award is presented to leaders whom have contributed the most to improving public health at the community level.
"It’s an honor to be recognized by an organization that helps provide primary and preventive health care services in our community, including to those who are greatest risk because they are uninsured or underinsured," Kelly said.
"Thousands of Kansans are struggling to cope with the rising cost-of-living and cannot afford private insurance or to pay out-of-pocket for medical care," Kelly continued. "Without these vital services, uninsured patients are likely to forego care until their medical problems require emergency treatment or inpatient hospital care."
Senator Kelly serves as the Ranking Minority Member of the Senate Ways and Means Committee, which is responsible for recommending to the legislature an annual state budget that addresses the needs of medical patients, and is a member of the Joint Committee on Health Policy Oversight. In 2008, she helped pass a comprehensive health care plan that improves access to affordable health care. "This year, the legislature put into motion several initiatives to ensure prenatal care for pregnant women, expand cancer screenings, and expand capacities in safety net clinics. Next session, I hope the legislature will continue working together to create true, viable solutions to the many health care challenges facing our state." she said.
Kelly serves the 18th Senate District, covering Wabaunsee County and northern Shawnee County.
