When the 2009 Legislative Session commences in January, Senator–elect Tom Holland, D-Baldwin City, will add Minority Agenda/Caucus Chair to his list of duties. Holland, who will begin his first term as state senator, was elected by acclamation to the joint leadership position by members of the Kansas Senate Democratic Caucus during caucus reorganization on December 1st, 2008.
“In the Kansas House of Representatives, Tom Holland helped guide many of the tax policy, insurance and school finance bills that passed through the legislature,” said Senate Democratic Leader Anthony Hensley. “As Agenda/Caucus Chair, Tom will be able to use his legislative experience to keep members of the caucus informed of possible amendments or controversial bills.”
As Agenda/Caucus Chair, Holland will be responsible for holding daily agenda meetings to discuss bills on General Orders. Holland will also be responsible for scheduling and leading biweekly meetings with legislative researchers, state officials and agency heads, or other interested parties on issues that the legislature will be discussing.
“It’s rare that a freshman senator would be appointed to any leadership position, but Tom’s enthusiasm and general knowledge of the issues have proven to me that he is ready to serve in such a role. I have full confidence in his ability to help lead our caucus in a positive direction,” Hensley concluded.
Democratic Senators filled four leadership positions during Monday’s reorganization meeting, including Democratic Leader, Assistant Democratic Leader, Minority Whip, and Agenda/Caucus Chair.
Senator-elect Holland will be sworn into office when the 2009 Session convenes on January 12th, 2009. The 3rd Senate District covers portions of Douglas and Leavenworth counties and all of Jefferson County.
